Use of could

निम्नलिखित अवस्थाओं में Could का प्रयोग होता है -
(a) Can के past tense form में, जैसे -

Ram told me that he could help me.

We did all that we could. मैने वह सभी किया जाे मैं कर सकता था |

I am sorry. I could not attend your birthday party . माफी चाहता हूँ | मैं आपकेे जन्मदिन के पार्टी में शामिल नहीं हो सका 

(b) भूतकाल में निहित क्षमता (past ability) बताने के लिए, जैसे -

I could pass the examination. (परीक्षा पास करने की क्षमता थी|) मैं परिक्षा पास कर सकता था |

She could drive a car at the age of six. वह 6 वर्ष  की आयु में कार चला सकती थी|

When I was young I could swim for hours. जब मैं जवान था तो मैं चार घंटे

तैर सकता था |

Note : यहाँ could के प्रयोग से सिर्फ क्षमता का बोध होता है, कार्य के पूरा होने का नहीं |कोई कार्य - व्यापार संपन्न हुआ इसके लिए was /were able to, managed to, succeeded in इत्यादि का प्रयोग होता है |जैसे -

(i) He could pass the examination. परीक्षा पास करने की क्षमता थी परंतु पास किया या नहीं यह मालूम नहीं |

(ii) He was able to pass the examination /He passed the examination. शक्ति और सामर्थ्य के कारण पास कर सका |

(c) विनम्र अनुरोध /अनुमति (polite request /permission) के लिए, जैसे -

Could I smoke in here? क्या मैं यहां धुम्रपान कर सकता हूँ?

Could I go home now? क्या मैं अब घर जाासकता हूँ |

Could I borrow your book for a day? क्या मैं एक दिन के लिए आपकी किताब उधार ले सकता हूँ?

Note : Could is more formal than can /may in this sense.

(d) unreal conditions में संभाव्य क्षमता का बोध कराने के लिए, जैसे -

If we had more money, we could buy a car.अगर हमलोगों के पास अधिक पैसे होते तो हमलोग एक कार खरीदता

You could catch the train if you would.तुम रेलगाड़ी पकड़ लेते अगर आप पकड़ सकते |


 If he could help, he would.वह मदद करता अगर वह मदद कर सकता तो |

O + could have been +v3.


'Could' is used to show past ability, possibility,request, suggestion,annoyance,possibility in the past, permission.

Note : could का प्रयोग present, past, and future तीनों अर्थों में किया जाता है |Meaning वाक्य संरचना पर निर्भर करता है |

Examples :

Past ability

Could you hear what I was saying. क्या आपको मेरी आवाज़ सुनाई पड़ रही थी |

He said he could do that work. उसने कहा कि वह काम कर सकता था |

I could not speak English when I was a child. मैं बचपन में अंग्रेजी नहीं बोल पाता था |

I know I couldn't afford that much money.मैं जानता था कि इतनी रकम नहीं खर्च कर सकता था |

Possibility

He could have a change of heart at any time. कभी भी उसका मन बदल सकता है |

Most accidents could be prevented. अधिकतर दुर्घटनाएं रोकी जा सकती है |

If you are not careful, you could get into even worse trouble. यदि आप सावधान नहीं हैं तो आप संकट में फंस सकते हैं |

A faulty electric connection could easily cause a fire. गलत बिजली कनेक्शन के कारण आसानी से आग लग सकती है |

Your decision could have a negative impact on the company. आपके निर्णय से कंपनी पर बुरा प्रभाव पड़ सकता है |
