Use of Can

Can सकना = सामर्थ्य / क्षमता का बोध कराने के लिए

सामर्थ्य /क्षमता का बोध :

वह यह काम कर सकता है |He can do this work.

(a) शक्ति / योग्य / क्षमता (power / ability /capacity) बताने के लिए, जैसे-

मैं तैर कर इस नदी को पार कर सकता हूँ |I can swim across the river.

मैं इस समस्या को हल कर सकता हूँ |I can solve this problem.

वह अंग्रेजी बोल सकता है |He can speak English.

बंदर एक पेड़ पर चढ़ सकते हैं |The monkey can climb a tree.

Note : यहाँ Can का अर्थ है - be able to /be capable of /know how to, जैसे -

वह अंग्रेजी बोल सकता है |He can speak English.

= He is able to speak English.
= He is capable of speaking English.
= He knows how to speak English.

(b) Permission के लिए, जैसे -

अब आप जा सकते हैं |You can go now.

आप पुस्तकालय से किताबें ले सकते हैं |You can take books from the library.

क्या मैं बैठ सकता हूँ? Can I sit down?

क्या मैं कुछ और रोटी ले सकता हूँ? Can I have some more bread, please?

Note : यहाँ Can का अर्थ है - be allowed to /be permitted to, जैसे -

You can go home. आप घर जा सकते हैं |

=आप को घर जाने के लिए इजाजत दिया जाता है | You are allowed to go home.

=आप को घर जाने के लिए अनुमति दिया जाता है | You are permitted to go home.

Note : Can is less formal than may in this sense.

(c) सैद्धांन्तिक संभावना ( theoretical possibility) बताने के लिए, जैसे -

कोई भी गलतियां कर सकते हैं? Anybody can make mistakes.

यह सही नहीं हो सकता है |This can't be true.

बीज्ली हानीकारक हो सकता है |Electricity can be dangerous.

पालतु परेसानी पैदा करने वाले बन सकते हैं |Pets can be troublesome.

(d) आदत और स्वभाव (habit or nature) बताने के लिए, जैसे -

एक छूट बोलने वाले किसी को भी धोखा दे सकता है |A liar can deceive anyone.

एक साधु नहीं किसी को हानी पहुँचा सकता है |A saint can harm no one.

वह विनम्र नहीं बन सकता है |He cannot be polite.

पुलिस एक innocent आदमी को सरमिन्दा कर सकता है |The police can harass an innocent person.

'Can' is used to show ability, capacity, permission, request, possibility, offer and purpose.

Note : can का प्रयोग continuous एवं perfect form में केवल negative व interrogative form में किया जाता है |

Ability

I can speak four languages with equal command. मैं चार भाषाएं सहजता से बोल सकता हूँ |

How many languages can you speak? आप कितनी भाषाएं बोल सकते हैं?

Can you drive? क्या आप गाड़ी चला सकते हैं?

Can she read and write? क्या वह पढ़ लिख सकती है |

Capacity

How many people can be accommodated in this room? इस कमरे में कितने लोग बैठ सकते हैं?

How many hours can you study at a stretch? लगातार बैठकर कितने घंटे तुम पढ़ाई कर सकते हो?

Request

Can I have your mobile number, please? क्या आप अपना मोबाइल नम्बर दे सकते हैं?

Can I have your attention, please? क्या आप ध्यान देंगे?

Can I ask you to wait for a while? क्या आप कुछ समय के लिए इंतज़ार कर सकते हैं?

Can you spare some time for me today? आज मुझे छोड़ दीजिए |

Can I ask you for a favour? क्या मैं आपसे मदद मांग सकता हूँ?

Can you move up a bit? क्या आप थोड़ा खिसक सकते हैं?

Can I use your pen? क्या मैं आपकी कलम इस्तेमाल कर सकता हूँ?

Can you call back a little later? आप खोड़ी देर बाद फोन करें ?

Can you explain the situation to me? क्या आप स्थिति के बारे में ब्यौरा दे सकते हैं?

Offer

Can I help you? क्या मैं आपकी कोई मदद कर सकता हूँ?

Can I be of any assistance? क्या मैं आपकी कोई मदद कर सकता हूँ?

Can I take you home? क्या आपको घर छोड़ दूं ?

Can I bring you a drink? क्या मैं आपके के लिए एक पेय लाऊं ?

You can rely on me. आप मुझ पर भरोसा कर सकते हैं?

Permission

Can I go home now? क्या मैं अब घर जा सकता हूँ?

You can't park here. It's a no parking zone. आप यहाँ गाड़ी नहीं लगा सकते हैं |यहाँ पार्किंग वर्जित है |

Can I leave now? क्या मैं अब जा सकता हूँ?

Can I ask you a question? क्या मैं आपसे एक प्रश्न पूछ सकता हूँ?

Now you can go. अब आप जा सकते हैं?

Possibility

That can't be right. वह सही नहीं हो सकता है |

Plastic can be moulded into any shape. प्लास्टिक को किसी भी आकार में ढाला जा सकता है |

If you have any complaints, you can talk to me. आपको कोई शिकायत हो तो आप मुझ से बात कर सकते हैं |

There can be no doubt that he is guilty. इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं हो सकता है कि वह दोषी है|

He can't have gone to cinema as he was with me the whole day. वह सिनेमा नहीं गया होगा क्योंकि वह सारा दिन मेरे साथ था |

His application can't have been rejected. उसका आवेदन पत्र अस्वीकृत नहीं हुआ होगा |

Purpose

I read this book so that I can learn English.मैं यह किताब पढ़ता हूँ ताकि अंग्रेजी सीख पाऊं |

He walks fast so that he can catch the train. वह तेज चलता है ताकि वह गाड़ी पकड़ सके |

Use of Can

'Can ' is a modal verb. It is only a modal verb. A modal verb does not have five forms like an ordinary verb : v1, v2, v3, v4, v5,. So 'can' is used in its only form 'can' with any subject. It doesn't change according to a subject.

The structures are :

Simple : S +can +v1.

Simple passive : O can +be + v3 .

Continuous : S +can + be + v4.

Perfect : S + can + have +v3. (in negative and interrogative only)

Perfect passive : O + can +have + v3 .

Affirmative

वह यह काम कर सकता है |He can do this work.

Negative

वह यह काम नहीं कर सकता है |He cannot do this work.

Interrogative

क्या वह यह काम कर सकता है ? Can he do this work?

Int. Negative

क्या वह यह काम नहीं कर सकता है ? Can he not do this work?

Use1. To express ability which may be physical, mental or circumstantial. Can=be able to.

वह धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेजी बोल सकती है| She can speak English fluently.

मैं इस प्रश्न को हल कर सकता हूँ |I can solve this problem.

Conversation

Q: Can you speak English fluently? क्या आप धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेजी बोल सकते हैं?

A: Yes, of course, I can. Or sorry, I can't speak it fluently but I can speak tolerably. हां, जरूर मैं बोल सकता हूँ |अथवा, क्षमा करें, मैं धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेजी नहीं बोल सकता हूँ लेकिन थोड़ा बहुत बोल सकता हूँ |

Q: How many languages can you speak? आप कितनी भाषाएं बोल सकते हैं ?

A: Well, I can speak as many as five languages. देखिए मैं करीब - करीब पांच भाषाएं बोल सकता हूँ |

Q: Can anyone work out this problem? क्या आप मैं से कोई इस समस्या का समाधान ढूंढ सकता है?

A : O. K. Let me know what the problem is and I will try. ठीक है |आप पहले मुझे समस्या की जानकारी दीजिए |मैं कोशिश कर सकता हूँ |

Q : Who can lift 100 kg here? यहां कौन सौ किलोग्राम वजन उठा सकता है?

A : Me मैं उठा सकता हूँ |

Q : Can you speak and write the Maithili language? क्या आप मैथिली भाषा बोल और लिख सकते हैं?

A : Well, I can speak it but I can't write it. देखिए, मैं बोल सकता हूँ पर लिख नहीं पाता|

Q : Can you attend the class tomorrow? क्या कल तुम कक्षा में उपस्थित रह सकते हो?

A : Sorry, I shan't be able to attend it tomorrow because I 'll be somewhere else. माफ कीजिए, मैं उपस्थित नहीं रह सकता क्योंकि मैं कहीं और रहूंगा |

Use 2. To express possibility. Can = be possible to.

Affirmative sentences

S + Can + v1.

वह यह काम कर सकता है |He can do this work.

Negative sentences

S + Cannot + v1. Or S + Can't + v1.

वह यह काम नहीं कर सकता है |He cannot do this work or He can't do this work.

वह देख नहीं सकता है |He cannot see or He can't see.

गूँगे नहीं बोल सकता है |The dumb cannot speak or The dumb can't speak.

मैं नहीं दोड़ सकता हूँ |I cannot run.

वह कार नहीं खरीद सकता है |He cannot buy a car.

Note : cannot को एक साथ लिखा जाता है can अलग और not अलग नहीं |

Interrogative sentences

Can +S + v1..?

क्या वह यह काम कर सकता है ? Can he do this work?

क्या आप अंग्रेजी पढ़ सकते हैं? Can you read English?

क्या तुम तैर सकते हो ? Can you swim?

क्या गूँगे बोल सकते हैं? Can the dumb speak?

क्या वह नाच सकती है ? Can She dance ?

Interrogative negative sentences

Can + S + not + v1...? Or Can't + S + v1...?

क्या वह यह काम नहीं कर सकता है? Can he not do this work? Or Can't he do this work?

क्या वह नहीं दोड़ सकता है? Can he not run or Can't he run?

क्या वह देख नहीं सकता है? Can he not see?

क्या गूँगे नही बोल सकते हैं? Can the dumb not speak?

क्या वह कार नहीं खरीद सकता है? Can he not buy a car?

वह क्या कर सकता है ? What can he do ?

आप उसे कैसे हरा सकते हैं ? How can you defeat him?

तुम क्यों नहीं तैर सकते हो ? Why can you not swim ? Or Why can't you swim?

मैं इस नदी को पार क्यों नहीं कर सकता हूँ ? Why can I not cross this river ?

वह क्यों नहीं नाच सकती है ? Why can She not dance ?

यह बच्चा क्यों नहीं दौड़ सकता है ? Why can this child not run ?

Passive voice

Simple : S + can+ + be +v3

उसे पीटा जा सकता है |He can be beaten.

उसे पढ़ाया जा सकता है |He can be taught.

उसे हराया जा सकता है |He can be defeat.

इस दीवार को तोड़ा जा सकता है |This wall can be broken.

S + cannot +be +v3 .
or
S + can't + be v3.

रोगी को नहीं बचाया जा सकता है |The patient cannot be saved. Or The patient can't be saved.

मुझे नहीं पीटा जा सकता है |I cannot be beaten.

उसे नहीं पीटा जा सकता है |He cannot be beaten.

उसे नहीं पढ़ाया जा सकता है |He cannot be taught.

उसे नहीं हराया जा सकता है |He cannot be defeat.

इस दीवार को नहीं तोड़ा जा सकता है |This wall cannot be broken.

Interrogative sentences of passive voice

क्या बाघ को मारा जा सकता है ? Can a tiger be killed?

Present possibility (वर्तमान समय में कोई कार्य हो रहा होगा संभावना का बोध कराने के लिए )

Continuous : S + can + be + v4 .

वह नहीं आ रही होगी |She cannot be coming.

वह पढ़ाई नहीं कर रही होगी |She cannot be studying.

S + cannot + be + v4 .
Or
S + can't + be + v-ing.

Note : V4 और v1 - ing दोनो एक ही चीज़ है verb का चौथा रूप मतलब present participle जैसे - v1 go - ing = going, eating, running, sleeping ....etc

वह नहीं आ रही होगी |She cannot be coming. Or she can't be coming.

क्या वह पढ़ रही होगी ? Can she be studying ?

Interrogative sentences

Can + s + be + v4 ?

क्या वह खेल रहा होगा ? Can he be playing ?

Note : can का प्रयोग continuous form में केवल negative and interrogative form में किया जाता है |

To express a guess or speculation. In this sense 'Can' is used with limited words like only, hardly, never and is used only in interrogative and negative sentences.

Perfect : S + can + have + v3 .

Possibility

वह सिनेमा नहीं गया होगा क्योंकि वह सारा दिन मेरे साथ था |He can't have gone to the cinema as he was with me the whole day.

वह स्कूल नहीं गई होगी |She can't have gone to school.

वह कहाँ गई होगी ? Where can she have gone ?

Note : can का प्रयोग perfect form में केवल negative व interrogative form में किया जाता है |

Perfect Passive voice

S + cannot + have been + v3.

उसका आवेदन पत्र असवीकृत नहीं हुआ होगा |His application can't have been rejected

To express phrasal use of can ( Can't help + v4 )

मैं हंसे बिना नहीं रह सकता |I can't help laughing.

मैं पिताजी को बिना लिखे नहीं रह सकता |I can't help writing to Papa.

क्या तुम उससे मिले बिना नहीं रह सकते ? You can't help meeting him.

वह सच्चाई बताए बिना नहीं रह सकती |She can't help telling the truth.

वह सच बोले बिना नहीं रह सकती |She can't (help) but tell the truth.

S + can't have + o + v1.

मैं तुम्हें यहाँ धुम्रपान नहीं करने दे सकता हूँ |I can't have you smoke here.

मैं तुम्हें यहाँ बैठने नहीं दे सकता हूँ |I can't have you sit here.

मैं उसे यहाँ खेलने नहीं दे सकता हूँ |I can't have him play here.
